The Engineering Building at 205 West Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois was completed in 1928 and was last remodeled extensively in the 1980’s. This remodel was starting to show its age and did not reflect the hi-energy loft environment many potential occupants were looking for in an office building. While the lobby had been expanded, its size was increased at the expense of many of the building’s original details and with a reduced ceiling height accommodating mechanical routing. Holabird & Root developed a comprehensive strategy that allowed us to return the ceiling to its original height and to restore the existing column capitals and ornate moldings that were previously hidden beneath the dropped ceiling. Holabird & Root added additional sparkle through a carefully planned lighting strategy and was also able to add warmth by including new wood trim and a large wood ceiling element that connects the lobby desk with seating areas. The remodel also includes new stone work that matches the original lobby stone.
