The Engineering Building at 205 West Wacker Drive in Chicago was last remodeled extensively in the 1980’s. While the lobby had been expanded, its size was increased at the expense of many of the building’s original details and with a reduced ceiling height accommodating mechanical routing.
Holabird & Root developed a comprehensive strategy that allowed the ceiling to return to its original height and to restore the existing column capitals and ornate moldings that were previously hidden beneath the dropped ceiling.
Carefully planned lighting strategy added additional sparkle and new wood trim and large wood ceiling elements added warmth that connects the lobby desk with seating areas.
The remodel of this 243,000 sq. ft. space also included new stone work that matches the original lobby stone.
