The Department of Health Building houses research laboratories and office space for the Drug Discovery/Medicinal Chemistry program. In addition, the building program consist of 14 other user groups, from a child research institute to offices for clinical research and supercomputing facility. Holabird & Root was brought in to renovate the 201,000-g.s.f. laboratory and office building. Scope of work improvements included upgrades in building codes, failed systems, 15-year life cycle systems, energy use, and threshold occupancy. In the end, all six floors including the basement garage were renovated. The pre-design document governed the required scope of work in order to construct a total existing adaptive reuse within 18 months. By working with a construction manager to design and build the project within a six-phased sequence, the project was completed within the allowed time frame.
