In keeping with the Chicago Housing Authority’s goals as outlined in its multi-year “Plan for Transformation,” Holabird & Root is providing architectural, engineering, and interior design services for the Altgeld Gardens and Murray Homes Redevelopment. This complex of mainly two-story row houses includes its own schools, maintenance staff, and on-site social services and medical facilities. It is one of the first public housing developments ever built in the United States and is considered a historic landmark property. The redevelopment includes the complete renovation of all residential units, improved public and semi-private landscaping, and upgraded residential parking lots. The redevelopment places special emphasis on energy-efficient design, handicap accessibility, and green technology.
