Aquinas College Performing Arts Center

Open / Close

Holabird & Root; in association with Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber; designed a new 28,500-square-foot theater facility on the campus of Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Aquinas College, Catholic Secondary Schools, and Circle Theatre collaborated to turn this vision into a reality.  The theater lobby, with its large windows, encourages people to experience the surrounding environment and accommodates pre-performance receptions, audience circulation, the concession stand, box office, and public restrooms. The theater has a thrust stage with stepped, stadium-style seats. All seats are within 36 feet of center stage, ensuring audience intimacy and encouraging patrons to walk on stage to experience the set. Dressing/makeup rooms and an adjoined green room; areas for instruction and production; and space for the storage of costumes, props, and scenery are all tucked under the seating at a lower level.  A 180-seat black box theater includes flexible staging and separate access for actors. The black box duplicates the main stage size to double as a rehearsal hall.
