The Vermeer Science Center is a total reworking of the tired bunker-like facility originally constructed in the late 1970s. The new, 43,645-g.s.f. addition wraps around the original building on two sides to create a new, more open expression for the sciences. A continuous link of labs runs along the west face to provide spaces for interdisciplinary research.
The Center is the first LEED-certified science facility in Iowa and received the Silver level of certification.
