Grinnell College wanted to modify their fragmented Noyce Science Center to reflect their interdisciplinary approach to academics. The phased project involved a complete renovation and two significant additions.
In Phase 1, an addition was wrapped along the primary façade of the original building, resulting in a common circulation passage and a more comprehensive unity. Lecture rooms and a common gathering area are located at the knuckle of this addition.
In Phase 2, a second addition with a two-story study space established a new presence toward the street. The introduction of natural light throughout the buildings helps orient the user through the science complex, creates a better environment for interactive learning, and makes the activities taking place within the building visible to the surrounding campus.
