Grinnell College enlisted Holabird & Root to modify their fragmented Noyce Science Center to reflect their interdisciplinary approach to academics. The project involved a complete renovation and two significant additions.
In Phase 1, an addition was wrapped along the primary façade of the original building, resulting in a common circulation passage and a more comprehensive unity. Lecture rooms and a common gathering area are located at the knuckle of this addition.
In Phase 2, a second addition with a two-story study space established a new presence toward the street. The introduction of natural light throughout the buildings helps orient the user through the science complex, and makes the activities taking place within the building visible to the surrounding campus.
