Based on the program and Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas’ design, Holabird & Root, in a joint venture with Office for Metropolitan Architecture, executed the design for the new McCormick-Tribune Campus Center. The Center contains a variety of social and recreational spaces for students and faculty such as dining halls, event and meeting spaces, retail, auditoriums, a disk jockey booth, and a small museum dedicated to Mies van de Rohe. The Center houses the administrative offices and support spaces for student organizations as well. The design features a monumental 600-ft. long steel and concrete tube that encloses the section of the existing elevated train running above the facility. The tube serves as an innovative and unprecedented acoustical device to shield the center from the noise and vibration of the train.
