Western Illinois University Quad Cities Campus Phase II, Programming and Master Planning

After receiving a land gift, Western Illinois University began to unify several campus facilities into a single location on their new riverfront property. To prepare for a dramatic increase in enrollment, the University asked Holabird & Root to look to the future and assess the spaces that will be required to support their academic standards and student life goals. Using tools developed over decades of designing learning environments, Holabird & Root created an accurate, informed building program. The program efficiently uses classroom spaces so fewer classrooms need to be built than originally projected, freeing up limited resources that can be spent on other space types. The Riverfront Campus now supports 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The building houses general and specialized instructional facilities, faculty and staff office space, smart classrooms, science laboratories, libraries, several student support spaces, and a childcare component. The campus is now occupied currently in full occupied use.
