CHA ALTGELD GARDENS-MURRAY HOMES REDEVELOPMENT
Built in the 1940’s, the CHA’s Altgeld Gardens-Murray Homes development includes 1,998 existing residential units in 225 two-story masonry buildings, covering approximately 144 acres on Chicago’s far south side.
In addition to providing A/E services to the development, Holabird & Root created a long-term, multi-phased vision for the development of the Altgeld Gardens Town Center to better serve the residents of Altgeld Gardens.
New infrastructure includes mass transportation, economic opportunities, retail and commercial options, professional suites, and community service buildings. Additionally, goals included establishing a mixed-use, downtown district and a plan for an integral relationship among Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Chicago Park District (CPD), Chicago Public Library (CPL), and the surrounding community. The end result is a mixed-use development that contains the required programmatic diversity that any thriving city would have.
