VERMILLION, SOUTH DAKOTA

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA BAILEY & KATHY AALFS AUDITORIUM

The University of South Dakota’s Bailey & Kathy Aalfs Auditorium, first opened in 1925 and later dedicated in 2011, suffered from water damage, outdated seating and view angles, and poor acoustics given the space’s use.

Holabird & Root began the project by reshaping the entire stage including reconstructing the theatrical gridiron, resurfacing and extending the stage, and adding additional structure to the proscenium to allow for larger equipment.

The renovation updated the 21,000-square-foot building to modern building codes including distributed accessible seating, restrooms, and accessible stage access. The design team also enlarged the lobby, allowing for multi-tiered entry and providing sound and light locks to prevent disruption of performances.
