MASON CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY MASTER PLAN, RENOVATION & EXPANSION
Gathering input from a broad range of local groups, institutions, and individuals, Holabird & Root worked with the library director and staff to create a long-term vision for the revitalization of the Mason City Public Library.
The renovation and addition provides the Mason City community with an updated facility within its historic exterior. The renovation included designing new mechanical and electrical systems that allow for new technology throughout the facility.
The interior retained its distinctive original wood finishes and some of the original furniture. The library’s original large reading rooms are featured with generous windows overlooking the wooded landscape and a creek. The high ceilings, stunning natural views, and unique details, including a fireplace and a conservatory-like “story time room” in the Youth Services area, have made this building a welcoming and distinguished public space.
In addition to the original main entrance, the building has a new “Commons” entrance that acts as a lobby and informal gathering space with a café and a small retail area. The space is very open with glassy façades that visually connect the front landscaped plaza to the rear terrace of the Commons.
“Community Center” spaces are clustered around the Commons area with new public restrooms and a kitchen. Spaces include a multipurpose classroom, a large multipurpose community hall, several small group study rooms, and the Mason City History Archives associated with the library.
